Karl Malchow

January 8, 1941 — December 20, 2018

Detroit Lakes

Karl August Malchow, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother passed away after a lingering illness with Congestive Heart Failure at home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

He is survived by wife, Henrietta, sons:  Todd, Michael (DeeDee), Kalan (Renee) along with grandchildren:  Zachary, Benjamin, Kassandra, Bridgette (Dustin), Brandi (Justin), Keeleigh, Brooklyn and Mishaela, step-grandchildren:  Alyssa and Derek Klunenberg, great-grandchildren:  Greyson and Oakley and one brother, Louis Malchow.

Karl was born to Mervin and Dorothy (Lienke) Malchow of Bingham Lake, MN on January 8, 1941.  Karl was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom, MN.  He grew up on the family farm near Bingham Lake and graduated from Windom High School in 1958.  While attending the University of Minnesota he received a call from his father regarding his interest in joining the farming operation.  Karl along with his brother Louis joined the operation and continued farming until retirement in 2003.

Karl had three requests.  There is to be no mourning but a celebration of his life, keep the obituary short and do not list the many boards he served on as he did not serve for the accolades but to hopefully make a difference.  Karl enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard on November 8, 1960 and was honorably discharged November 7, 1966.  He was a long time member of the American Legion Post 206 in Windom and later Post 15 in Detroit Lakes.

On November 19, 2003, Karl and Henrietta moved from Windom to their lake home on Pearl Lake near Detroit Lakes.  They would spend the next ten years enjoying lake life and the memories created with family and friends.  March 2014, they moved into their twin home in Detroit Lakes.

In retirement, Karl continued to be an avid reader and even had an interest in fishing.  He was the Captain of the Lund and enjoyed that title.  November 2006 they become members of the Detroit Lakes Cultural and Community Center and worked out at the gym many mornings together.  Karl attributed added years to his life to the DLCCC.

Blessed be his memory
