Curtis Shaw

January 19, 1930 — November 4, 2019

Curtis D Shaw, 89, of Detroit Lakes MN, passed away peacefully at home on November 4, 2019, surrounded by his three children, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Services will be held on Thursday November 7, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with Tim Cook officiating.

Curtis was born in Frazee, MN to Claude and Anna (Winters) Shaw and grew up in the Toad Lake area. He joined the Air Force in 1950. He served during the Korean Conflict and was proud to say he was one of the last military groups to service and refuel on B-29 aircraft.

He was joined in marriage to Renee M. Wesche on April 4, 1958 in Rock Rapids, Iowa. They made their home in Minneapolis until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1971. Curtis was in sales for 25 years both in Minneapolis and the Detroit Lakes area. One of his proudest accomplishments was designing, building, and operating Go-Putt-N-Bump Amusement Park. He built it on part of the farmstead property his parents left him, and he operated it for 30 seasons with his wife Renee and son Tim.  He worked daily during the summers, and he was able to enjoy his winters in Texas first with Renee, until she passed, and then with his significant other, Ada Harrell of Donna, Texas.

Curtis served on the Detroit Lakes Tourism Committee for 10 years. He was an active member in the Elks, Eagles, and American Legion clubs. He was also a Charter Member of the Antique Automobile Club of America-412 Chapter. He enjoyed buying and selling old cars, hunting, fishing, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was known for his sense of humor and he was always quick with jokes, which kept his family and friends laughing heartily.

Curtis is survived by his three children; Kathy (Steve) Jaeger of Ham Lake, MN, Tim (Denise) Shaw of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Linda Shaw of Detroit Lakes, MN. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Scott and Karli Jaeger, Barb (Bryan) Niemi, Melissa (Raymond) Gillette, Jason Borah, and Kali and Skyler Benson, one great-granddaughter;  Abigail Gillette, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Renee; a son Kenneth; his parents Claude and Anna; a brother Edgar and significant other of 12 years, Ada Harrell.

We sincerely appreciate the staff of Adult Day Services of Ecumen in Detroit Lakes, as well as all of the encouragement and support of the staff of Hospice of the Red River Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials be sent to these wonderful programs.
