Virginia McCoy, 97, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, at Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Linda and Carol; her four grandchildren, James, Aaron, Carrie, and Laurie; and their families. A private prayer/burial service will be held in Crosby, MN.
Virginia was a devoted mother, grandma, and great grandma who cherished the special relationships she shared with each generation. She loved to travel, play cards, and she enjoyed a good California burger or hot fudge sundae from time to time. Many afternoons were spent playing games, such as Hearts, Rummikub, or Bid Euchre with family or friends. These simple moments of laughter, conversation, and togetherness were some of her favorites.
Teaching was an important part of her life. Virginia started teaching in Deerwood and country schools before accepting a position at Crosby-Ironton schools. Overall, she taught for about 35 years. The majority of her teaching years were spent in 4th grade, which was her favorite. Her students held a special place in her heart, and she would always smile when sharing memories from her years in the classroom.
Virginia also lived life with a wonderful sense of adventure and willingness to embrace life’s changes. She spent her time traveling, gardening, and reading. Years after losing her first husband, Russell, and retiring from teaching, she met and married her second husband, Wayne, and found great happiness in another chapter of her life. Together they enjoyed escaping the cold in Minnesota by wintering in Florida.
During her lifetime, she had experienced almost a century of change and accumulated a lifetime of stories, memories, and experiences. However, her greatest legacy is the family she loved so dearly and the many people who were fortunate enough to know her.
