Virginia Ione Hoff

October 18, 1935 — March 26, 2024

Detroit Lakes

Virginia I. Hoff, 88, of Moorhead and formerly of Detroit Lakes, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at Essentia Health in Fargo.

A time for visitation will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024, at David-Donehower Funeral Service. A funeral service will then begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Melissa Pickering officiating. Interment will take place at Hamar Cemetery in Rothsay.

Virginia was born on October 18, 1935, in Rothsay, MN, to Clarence and Myrtle (Moen) Anderson. She was confirmed at South Emmanuel Church in Rothsay. After completing school, her first job was doing prep work at City Bakery in Fergus Falls. The owner was so impressed with her he promoted her to head cashier. While working at City Bakery, Virginia was set up on a blind date with Marland Hoff by one of his friends. The two became inseparable and were wed on March 24, 1956, a marriage that would blossom for 66 years.

While raising their family they owned and operated 2 restaurants in Fergus Falls.  The Eat-Mor 1962-1965 and then the Viking 1965-1967. After selling the Viking Café, they moved to Clear Lake, IA, then to Pelican Rapids, Alexandria, Breckenridge, and then finally, in 1976, to Detroit Lakes where they settled. She enjoyed being a single family at-home daycare provider for several years; there was always a high-chair at Virginia’s house. She was the rock of the family, supporting her husband’s professional ambitions while caring for their children and managing the family finances.

Virginia was a very particular woman who liked to make sure everything was taken care of. Her hair, nails, and clothes were impeccably perfect, as was the cleanliness of her home. Her purse of choice was always Coach, she loved leather coats, and she collected every Santa Bear Dayton’s produced. During the summer, she enjoyed sitting on her patio overlooking the Pelican River where she could watch and feed birds as she drank coffee. Virginia was a great Norwegian cook, with her roast beef and Swedish meatballs being fondly remembered.

Though Virginia liked to keep to herself, she was extremely family orientated. She liked to keep in touch with everyone and know what was going on in her loved ones’ lives. Phone conversations with her grandchildren were especially important to her, and she made sure that she would talk to them often.

Left to cherish Virginia’s memory are her children: Marcia (Craig) Olson of Frazee, MN; Terry (Deb) Hoff of Breckenridge, MN; Steve (Char) Hoff of Hillsboro, MN; and Mark (Kim) Hoff of St. Cloud, MN; her grandchildren: Mitchell (Becca) Hoff, Casey (Dr. Tammy) Olson, Andrea (Andrew Stevens) Olson, Kyle (Kristin) Hoff, Christopher Johnson, Daniel Linden, and Chandell Linden; her great-grandchildren: Reese, Riley, Everly, Brecklyn, Ari, Emmitt, Geremie, and Justin; her sister, Sharon Flatin; her grand-puppy, Cooper; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Marland; her parents; and her brothers, Paul and Sonny Anderson.

The family would like to thank Farmstead for their loving care given to Virginia.

Memorials can be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
