Vertis Bonrud

Vertis A. Bonrud, 88, Dilworth, MN, passed Sunday, October 17 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 21 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Father Chuck Huck, officiating. Interment will be in the Holy Rosary Cemetery.

There will be a Rosary recited at 12:30 pm followed by visitation from 1:00 - 2:00 pm at the church on Thursday.

Vertis Arthur Bonrud was born on December 25, 1932 in Flandreau, SD to Arthur and Florence (Hagedorn) Bonrud. He spent his early years in Flandreau and following his education, joined the U. S. Army where he was stationed in Alaska. Following his discharge, he returned to Flandreau. Vertis was united in marriage to Jean Ploehn, August 12, 1955 in Lake Park, MN. They lived in Flandreau for a short time prior to moving to Detroit Lakes, MN. He worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in Detroit Lakes before transferring to Dilworth, Mn in 1967 where Vertis continued to work for the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He retired in 1995 and began working at the MNDot scale, a job he held 1995 -2005. While working, Vertis did small engine and lawnmower repair out of his garage. He loved his time with his jobs and the people he worked with.

Vertis was a kind and gentle soul and a great Dad. He had a beautiful smile and great laugh. He enjoyed visiting with people. He also loved going for car rides around the area lakes with his daughter. We would enjoy looking for animals especially turkeys and deer. We would have fun getting “lost” and then finding out way back home. He enjoyed listening to music. We always had to have Willie's Roadhouse in the car. Vertis always wore his driving hat.  He liked country music and listening to Polka Party. He also enjoyed eating at Pizza Ranch. With COVID, they delivered to him. He will be so missed.

Surviving him is his daughter, Kathy Sorensen of Brandon, SD, brother Don Smith(Ardis), nephew David LaRochelle, niece Debbie Barnes, niece Diane Waggoner, sister-in-law Carol Ploehn, and extended family. Jean passed in 2018.
