Valentin “Val” Schaleben, 77, Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, December 9, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his family and friends and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Per Valentin’s request, no services will be held.
Valentin Charles Schaleben was born January 1, 1941 in Minneapolis, MN to Lee and Charlotte (Hedeland) Schaleben. He moved with his family to Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1959. Val was an owner of Schaleben Fur Company along with his father and brother. Val travelled throughout the Dakotas and Minnesota buying and selling furs until his retirement. Through his working career, Val made many lifelong friendships. In 1965, Val was united in marriage with Sandra Craft. They resided in Detroit Lakes. Val and Sandy were outdoor enthusiasts. They loved to hunt big game and fish and these hobbies took them to Canada and across the United States. Sandy passed away in 2003. Val enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, enjoying a fine scotch and was active in supporting organizations dealing with habitat preservation.
Valentin is survived by his one brother: Wilhelm “Bill” (Mary) Schaleben of Detroit Lakes, two nephews: Lee (Kim) Schaleben of Fargo and Bill (Beth) Schaleben of Detroit Lakes. He is also survived by four nieces: Valerie Schaleben-French (Jack) of West Fargo, ND, Stacy (Eric) Abrahamson of Detroit Lakes, Tracy Warnke of Detroit Lakes and Cathy Warnke of Detroit Lakes.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Sandra.
