Steven John Nickolauson was born on March 3, 1964, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Arvin and Gladys (Smith) Nickolauson. On January 5, 2026, Steve departed this world, having spent his final moments at his residence in Ponsford, Minnesota, surrounded by the memories of a life well-lived and the bonds he cherished.
At the young age of 16, Steve made the pivotal decision to leave Frazee High School, stepping into the rhythm of labor at Gabor Trucking. His commitment to his work saw him transition to M&O Farms near Park Rapids, where he poured his heart into every task. With a true spirit for adventure, he later became an over-the-road driver for Daggett Truck Line, traversing the highways and the open roads. His career journey also included hauling gravel for Roger Klemm and ultimately finding a home as a Crusher Operator for Mark Sand & Gravel—a role he enjoyed tremendously. In addition to his varied career, Steve honorably served in the Army Reserves after obtaining his GED, demonstrating his commitment to duty and service.
Steve’s connection to the earth extended beyond his professional life; he was a hard worker who farmed in the summers and trapped during the winters. He found joy in raising hogs, being in communion with nature, and proudly embracing the simple pleasures of life. His hobbies and interests—fishing, cutting wood, reading history, gardening, and listening to talk radio with a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon in hand.
He leaves behind his beloved life partner of 20 years, Cindy Ziegler, along with his children, Amanda, Meghan, and Dakota; His brother, Kevin Nickolauson; Grandchildren, Deacon, Quinton, and several others, who will forever hold onto their grandfather’s spirit.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Arvin and Gladys [Smith] Nickolauson, a son, Jordan, and an infant sister.
An informal Visitation and combined Celebration of Life will take place on January 14, 2026, at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, beginning at 11am with a eulogy and time of sharing, followed by a social gathering of food and fellowship.
