Shirley M. Albertson, age 87, resident of Audubon, MN, died Friday, February 13, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 18 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, MN, Father Jerry Rogers Officiating. Visitation will be 4:30 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, February 17 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
Shirley Maxine Van Hyfte was born March 17, 1921 in Lisbon, North Dakota to August and Elizabeth (Catoor) Van Hyfte. She grew up in Lisbon graduating from Lisbon High School in 1939. As a young lady, Shirley worked at the Ben Franklin Store in Lisbon. On June 26, 1941, she married Arne Albertson. Together, they farmed near Lisbon until 1955 when both she and Arne moved into the city of Lisbon and worked for Moll’s Appliance. In 1959, Shirley went to work for Howell Drug and continued her employment there until 1965. They moved to Moorhead, MN and Shirley worked for Engeleter Drug and Montgomery Ward before taking a job with the Fargo Clinic in which she was a telephone operator until her retirement. In 1981, Arne and Shirley moved to Big Cormorant Lake near Detroit Lakes and they began enjoying their retirement years together. In 1990, Arne passed away. Shirley continued living at Big Cormorant Lake during the summers and resided in either Fargo or Detroit Lakes during the winters.
Shirley enjoyed playing bridge with friends, knitting, crocheting and quilt making. One of her enjoyments during the summer was tending to and watching her garden grow and when the time was right, she would start canning the vegetables. She wrote a book about her life before, during and after the Great Depression.
Shirley will be remembered and missed by her sons, Ron (aka Keith) of Wonder Lake, IL, and Cliff (Myra) of Sauk Rapids, MN; as well as four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, Mike (Kim) Albertson and their children Megan and Jason, Rachel, (Garrick) Ambrose and their children, Cedrick and Tariah, Cheryl, (Scott), DeJong and their sons Austin and Jalen, Lars (Hayley) Albertson and their son Lucas; along with special friends, Todd, Marla, Nate and Victoria Branden. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arne; daughter-in-law, Linda; and two sisters and their husbands, Florence (Craig) Mead and Mildred (Ralph) Briggs.
