Scott Matson

January 21, 1954 — September 26, 2025

Scott Kevin Matson, 71, of Detroit Lakes, MN, saddled up one last time and rode into the sunset on September 26, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He faced the disease the way he lived his life - like a cowboy; head high, boots on, and with fierce grit in his soul.

“[I was] Born on January 21, 1954, it was cold, I think, I really don’t remember. I was born in Moorhead, MN to Raymond & Marian Matson. The day I was born I already had one brother and two sisters. Not bad for starting out.”

From a young age he carried with him a love for driving anything to get him anywhere. From his grandpa’s car in the field, to tractors and combines of all shapes and sizes, to multiple muscle cars or his pickups - identifiable by two American flags. He was determined to get where he desired to go. Above all of these things though, was a boat. The place where his world stood still. The place where he and his dad would create traditions that would be later passed down to generation upon generation. The place where stories were told, that never grew old. These stories were filled with laughter of pranks where no one was immune. He even had fun with the nurses in his last weeks that would make their days brighter. They also included all of the animals he surrounded himself with. Scott could not be found without at least one animal in his lap, by his feet, or those out in the pasture - which he made sure all had names. Whether it was a dog, cat, rat, ferret, rabbit, raccoon, pheasant, pig, cow, horse, or sheep, you can be sure it was considered family.

He spent over five decades as a carpenter where he was known for his tireless work ethic, his dependable character, and his gift to quickly problem solve. You can guarantee there will be a humorous comment to follow. It was said that he did not have an enemy, and if he did, he would still give the shirt off his back to them (Even if it was sleeveless, snap up one). He believed in the power of honesty, a strong handshake, and keeping your word - a true cowboy code.

Scott's heart was with his family. He was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 2 years, Linda. A proud father to Larry (Julie) Matson, Sarah (Ryan) Orth, Julie (Joshua) Palkki and Jessie (Michael) Brost. And an adoring grandfather to numerous grandkids and great grandkids who were the light of his life. His family and friends will remember his laughter, stories, quick wit, and the way he made everyone feel welcome.

He is also survived by his siblings; Cliff (Shirley) Matson, Kathy Newman, and Connie (Dale) Frank. As well as numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends who will carry his stories and laughter forward.

A celebration of Scott's life will be held graveside at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes, MN on October 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family are invited to share memories and honor the cowboy who showed us how to ride strong until the very end.

Scott’s fight with cancer showed the world his true grit. Even on the toughest days, he met pain with courage and found moments of humor, hope, and love. Though his earthly ride has ended, Scott's spirit rides on - free, fearless, and just beyond the next horizon.
