Ronald “Ronnie” Glasgow McDonald Jr., age 83, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at the Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park, MN. A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 9, 2022, at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes with visitation 1 hour prior to service. Interment will follow service at Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
Ronnie was born on October 5, 1938, to Ronald and Effie (Anderson) McDonald Sr. in Detroit Lakes, where he would reside his whole life. After high school, Ronnie joined the United States Army, where he served for two years. He then joined the Army National Guard and served for 10 years. During this time, he met his first wife, Betty Murray, and the couple had two sons: Kevin and Keith. Ronnie would go on to remarry Julie Restad. Ronnie worked for the City of Detroit Lakes at the Northside and Southside liquor stores for several years each, but spent the majority of his career at the Off-Sale location.
Ronnie was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, especially fox and coyote. He enjoyed fishing, 4-wheeling in the Smokey Hills, and a little golfing. He also liked target shooting, and reloading shells.
Ronnie is survived by his sons, Kevin McDonald of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Keith (Teresa) McDonald of Fargo, ND; brothers, Curt (Sherry) McDonald of Dallas, TX; and Jim McDonald of Fort Worth, TX; step-children: Dianne (Bill) Sandsmark of Fargo, ND; Jed Restad of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Jill Restad of Detroit Lakes, MN; grandchildren: Cindy McDonald (Dillion Trudeau) of Fargo, ND; Hunter McDonald of Fargo, ND; Jessica Bentley of North Carolina; Lindsay Nerger of Seattle, WA; Ashley (John) Drewes of Frazee, MN; and Ryan (Radhika) McDonald of Mount Dora, FL.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Effie McDonald; a sister, Lavonne Muchow; step-children: Larry Murray, Debbie Schmit, Rick Peck, and Gary Schmit; and a sister-in-law, Linda McDonald.
Family is requesting that friends and family wear camouflage in Ronnie's honor.
In lieu of flowers, family is requesting donations be made to the Christian Fellowship Church, 28048 Meadow Drive, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501.
