Richard S. Johnson, 78, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, at HIA Heather's House in Fargo, ND. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda, and two daughters, Carrie and Laurie, along with their families, who will hold a private service to celebrate his life at a later date.
Family was the center of Richard’s life. He was a great husband, father, grandfather who shared his lifelong love for the outdoors with those that he loved. Some of his happiest days were spent on the water checking out fishing spots, sailing with a good breeze, or cruising in the pontoon. He was a member of the Parrot Heads for a few years and enjoyed island music and travel to tropical destinations. For many years, he also enjoyed playing trivia, with family and friends, around the Detroit Lakes area in various establishments.
Richard was a teacher at Lake Park/Audubon for many years and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his students, helping them learn, and encouraging them to figure out what they wanted for their future. He coached the knowledge bowl team and taught students how to tie flies and make their own fishing lures. Whether it was through his work, hobbies, or everyday life, he found satisfaction in passing along knowledge and experience and making connections with others.
When Richard wasn’t outside, he was just as happy settling in to watch a good movie or television series. He appreciated a good story and enjoyed sharing recommendations with family and friends. History was also one of his interests and he enjoyed action and adventure movies, such as the Indiana Jones and Jack Reacher series.
He will be remembered for his steady character, practical wisdom, sense of humor, and the care he showed to the people around him.
