Orland K. Hellie, age 88, of Detroit Lakes, MN, died August 8th 2018 at Ecumen-Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Orland “Keith” Hellie was born in Luverne, MN on March 18, 1930 to Grant and Pearl (Walquist) Hellie. He grew up in Hills, MN where he graduated high school in 1948. He served in the Luverne, MN, National Guard and enlisted in the Air Force in November 1951. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in November 1955. On the GI bill he enrolled in apprentice printing in October 1956 at Waupun, WI. There he met and married Margaret “Marge” Nordrum May 18, 1957. They had three children, David Hellie Detroit Lakes, MN; Kristen Gabrick Mesa, AZ; and Jean Collette Frazee, MN.
Keith owned various businesses during his lifetime including a gas station and garage in Hills, MN, a milk route and a motel in West Fargo, ND, a hotel and bar in Grafton, ND, a milk route and septic pumping service in Audubon, MN and Jeff’s Resort in Detroit Lakes, MN. During retirement he and Marge enjoyed winters in south Texas for 17 years and traveled extensively throughout the United States.
Keith is survived by his wife Marge Hellie of Detroit Lakes, one son, David Hellie of Detroit Lakes, MN; two daughters: Kristen (Michael) Gabrick of Mesa, AZ; and Jean (James) Collette of Frazee, MN; along with four grandchildren: Joshua (Katie)Collette, Kailen (Therese) Collette, Olivia Gabrick and Sophia Gabrick; six great-granddaughters. Keith is also survived by his sister Lois (Marshall) Loge of Hills, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, three brothers in-law, one sister in-law, two nephews and a great grandson. A private family funeral will be held at St. Peter’s Cemetery Audubon, MN.
