Myrna V. (Hastings) Nickolauson, 87, Fargo, formerly of Frazee and Detroit Lakes, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024 with her daughters by her side.

Myrna was born in Grand Forks, ND on June 21, 1936, the daughter of the late Lloyd and Cassie (Gillis) Hastings.  She grew up in Larimore, ND and graduated from Larimore High School with the class of 1954.  On January 19, 1957, Myrna was united in marriage to Elmer Nickolauson at the Larimore Methodist Church, and together they raised three daughters.

The family made their home in the Frazee area, where Myrna worked at Swift’s for many years.  She later worked as a realtor at Realty World in Detroit Lakes before becoming an ABO certified Optician.  As an Optician, Myrna worked at Jerry’s Optical, Walmart Vision Center, and MeritCare before retiring at age 70.

Myrna was active in the Ladies Aide, having been a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Height of Land and later Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee.  Some of Myrna’s favorite things were spending time with her grandchildren and family, taking care of her flowers, baking, cooking, and sewing. Myrna also traveled and enjoyed the many sights in Arizona, Washington DC, Maine, Iowa, Tennessee, Atlanta GA, and Florida.  Myrna will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Myrna is survived by her daughters: Vicki O’Sullivan of Detroit Lakes, Cheryl (Marc) Jariz of Denver, CO and Jill (Mark) Lund of Kindred, ND; her grandchildren: Kelly (Kevin) Schultz, Jeremy (Kim) O’Sullivan, Craig (Alice) Jariz and Jacob Lund.  She also leaves her great-grandchildren: Dillon and Ashley; her sisters-in-law: Marlene Hastings and Sandi Nickolauson, and brother-in-law, Kenny Post.  Myrna is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Myrna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer in 2000; her sisters:  Joyce (Cam) Mikkelsen and Bonnie Post; and her brother, Butch Hastings; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Arvin (Gladys) Nickolauson, Verllen Nickolauson, Donald (Carol) Nickolauson, J.D. Nelson, and Cam Mikkelsen; and niece, Debbie (Nelson) Peterson; and nephews: Allan Nelson and Jason Nickolauson.                                                                                                                          

A memorial visitation for Myrna will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 from 10 to 11 AM at David Donehower Funeral Home (609 US HWY 10 E., Detroit Lakes, MN 56501).  A funeral service will follow at 11 AM with Pastor Lauryl Ivers officiating.   Final rest will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in the spring.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Mapleview Memory Care, Bethany on University and Hospice of the Red River Valley.   Their kindness to Myrna will never be forgotten.
