Mayme Peterson

d. June 11, 2018

In the wee hours of the morning on June 11th, 2018, Jesus called his beloved Mayme, home.  Mayme Peterson, formerly of Detroit Lakes, MN passed away peacefully at the J.A. Wedum Hospice House in Brooklyn Park, MN.

Mayme was born in Detroit Lakes on August 3, 1925 to John and Sannie (Trowbridge) Swanson .  She was the youngest of four children. She grew up in the rural area surrounding Lake Eunice Free Church where, at a very young age, she met her future husband, Everett Peterson. She attended and graduated from high school at Oak Grove Seminary in Fargo, ND and thereafter attended Trinity Bible College in Minneapolis, MN. She was a nursing assistant at hospitals in Bemidji, Chicago and Minneapolis.

In 1948, she married Everett at the Lake Eunice Evangelical Free Church in rural Detroit Lakes, MN. and moved to Chicago for a short time before moving back to Everett's multi-generational family dairy farm on Pearl Lake in Detroit Lakes.  There they would make their home for 54 years.  They returned to the Lake Eunice Free Church community where she was found playing the piano almost every time the doors were open.

Mayme was a loving and compassionate person.  A "second mom” to many, she welcomed all to her home with open arms, often giving hugs to people she was just meeting.  She gifted many with her homemade doughnuts and fresh baked bread.  Probably the most beautiful gift of all, she blessed many hearts with her spirited interpretation of gospel and sacred songs.  No one could play The Holy City like Mayme.  She trusted her Heavenly Father for every aspect of her life and His love shone brightly through her sweet spirit.

In 2004, Everett and Mayme moved to a senior living community in Brooklyn Park, MN to be closer to their children. There she had many wonderful years surrounded by her children and grandchildren and, of course, she found many places to share her musical gift.

Everett and Mayme were blessed with four children:  Sherry (Ken) Leschisin,of Brooklyn Park, MN., Gail (Steve) Behnke of Burnsville, MN., Mark (Betty) Peterson of Missoula, MT., and Christine (Steve) Berg of Minneapolis, MN.  Mayme was the loving grandparent of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Sannie Swanson, husband: Everett Peterson, brothers: Bob Swanson and James Swanson, sister: Agnes (Swanie) English.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 14th, from 6:00-8:00 pm at the David-Donehower Funeral home in Detroit Lakes, MN.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at Lake Eunice Free Church. Funeral services will be Friday, June 15th, 2018 at 11:00 am at Lake Eunice Free Church, Detroit Lakes, MN with Pastor Dale Robins officiating.

A very special thanks to the staff at the J. A. Wedum Hospice House.  The loving-tender care that Mayme received in her final days was second to none.  Mayme and her family are eternally grateful.
