Matthew John Casey began his journey to everlasting peace on Friday, February 6, 2026. He leaves behind a significant imprint on the hearts of so many, who will continue to honor his mighty spirit and compassionate soul.
On September 4, 1940, Matt was born in Graceville, Minnesota, to Mathew and Anna Casey. He grew up with six brothers and sisters and was very active in high school sports and organizations. The “Casey Clan” remained exceptionally close over the years. They enjoyed many family reunions in Graceville and beyond, all illuminated by uproarious laughter and the pure joy of just being together.
After high school, Matt attended Moorhead State University to study elementary education, where he met his one true love, Martha “Mitsy” Johnstad. The couple married on August 12, 1961, in Mahnomen, Minnesota. Following graduation, they both worked as teachers and lived in Moorhead, Glencoe, Fergus Falls, and Mahnomen, Minnesota, before establishing their roots in Detroit Lakes in 1971. They raised five daughters and eventually made their dream of lake-living a reality in 1993. Both Matt and Mitsy proudly had a hand in the design and construction of their Fox Lake home, which has been a treasured family gathering place.
Throughout his life, Matt was guided by integrity and making a difference for those who needed it most. He focused his career on serving others and wholeheartedly believed in the principle of equity for all. After teaching for a few years after college, Matt worked for the Minnesota Job Corps, helping disadvantaged young adults achieve productive and meaningful lives through vocational training and education.
Matt’s career continued to evolve when he joined Rural Minnesota CEP (Concentrated Employment Program) in Detroit Lakes. Again, he was dedicated to ensuring everyone had access to employment opportunities so they could build a better future for themselves and their families, regardless of their circumstances or background.
In 1987, Matt became the Director of Becker County Human Services, where he served until his retirement in 2006. That position provided him with the opportunity to make a direct impact on his community and the surrounding area, especially for underserved families. Matt was involved in bringing awareness and resources regarding fetal alcohol syndrome to the area. He also oversaw the establishment of the Becker County Transit program, providing a sustainable option for all county residents with limited access to transportation. Matt was always committed to improving the quality of life for as many people as possible, and following retirement, he continued to serve on county boards for many years.
Matt was a devoted member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, teaching Sunday school, serving on several boards and councils, and supporting worship services. He was also involved in several local community organizations including the Boys and Girls Club, the Jaycees, and various volunteer work.
Matt was truly unforgettable. Even if you only met him once, you would remember him, and he would surely remember you. Family and friends will cherish him for his genuine thoughtfulness, wit, and sense of humor. He was his children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s biggest cheerleader and will be missed dearly.
Matt is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Lynn (Keith) Olson, Lori (Andy) Nustad, Lisa (David) Nelson, Debra Casey, and Dana (Patrick) Casey, ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Kathleen (Sean) Brady and Bonnie Ivey.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Pelican Valley Senior Living, Riverfront on Main, and Vivie Hospice Care. We will forever be grateful for their care and compassion.
A celebration honoring Matt’s life will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 11 a.m., at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Detroit Lakes, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. A light lunch will follow in Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local Boys and Girls Club or the Lakes Crisis Center in Detroit Lakes.
