Our sweet Matlyn Rose Tschider passed into eternal life on July 19, 2025 after a courageous battle with eating disorders, mental health struggles and addiction. Ultimately, her body weary from the fight, let go and found peace. For over eight years she battled these demons with stays at inpatient treatment centers, doctor consultations and outpatient programs, counseling and hospital trips. She fought very hard for a very long time and despite her attempts to claim her health back, that was not God’s plan for her. He does not always respond to our prayers in the way that we want. In response to the countless prayers of so many for her to get better, God decided to bring Matty home to Him.
Matlyn Rose was born in Grand Forks, ND on May 12, 1996 to Tom and Kari Tschider. She grew up in Detroit Lakes, MN, where countless memories were made on the lake with family and friends. At the start of 6th grade, Matlyn decided she would change the spelling of her nickname from Maty to Matty…to those closest she was Mat, Mat Mat, Mat Cat, Miss Mat or buddy. She played basketball and golf in high school, with 5 team trips to the State Golf tournament and 3 State Team Championships and also earned the opportunity to golf for the University of North Dakota where she was Captain her senior year. Matty graduated in 2019 with a degree in Special Education and loved working with her “kiddos”.
Throughout her life, and even as she endured her battles, she never ceased to make family and friends laugh, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and there were plenty of both! She was so caring and so kind to everyone she met - the type of genuine kindness that comes straight from the heart. From the bottom of our hearts, we wish she could have gotten healthy. Matty will be remembered for her kindness, her compassion, her gentle soul, and above all, love. So much love.
Matty is preceded in death by her grandfathers: Grandpa Dick and Pop Pop. She is survived by her loving parents, Tom and Kari; her sisters, Taylor (Stephen Lyngstad) and Lauren (Evan
Rene); her treasured nieces: Harper and Aubrey; her Nana Irene and Grandma Joni and many devoted aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will take place at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes on Monday, August 4th from 4-6pm with a prayer service at 6pm. The funeral will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, also in Detroit Lakes, on Tuesday, August 5th at 11am with visitation at the church beginning at 10am. Following the service a luncheon will be held at the church.
In honor of Matty, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), organizations dedicated to educating and supporting those affected by mental illness, eating disorders and addiction.
Her fight is over and she is finally at peace.
