Mary Jane McDougall

Mary Jane McDougall, age 74, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at home on August 18, 2026. She was born on August 20, 1951, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, to the late John and Delores Krump.

Mary graduated from Wahpeton High School with the Class of 1969 and later earned an LPN license as well as a certification in welding. Throughout her life, she found joy and purpose in her work, including her early years in the nursery and her time with Multi-County Nursing, Detroit Lakes Vo-Tech, and the Eagles Club of Detroit Lakes.

On July 25, 1981, Mary was united in marriage to Robert Lee “Bob” McDougall at Bonanzaville in Fargo, North Dakota. Together they made homes in Christine and Wahpeton, North Dakota, before settling in Detroit Lakes. Bob passed away on October 7, 2013. Mary remained a devoted mother and grandmother, known for her love of antiquing, old records, and trips to the casino.

A fourteen-year survivor of Leukemia, Mary received a life-saving stem cell transplant from her oldest sister, Darlene, on October 4, 2012. She faced countless challenges in the years that followed but met each one with courage and determination, ultimately enjoying many more cherished moments with her family and friends.

Mary is survived by her three devoted daughters, Kelly (Blair) Westrum, Jessica (Benjamin) Splonskowski, and Ashley McDougall, all of Detroit Lakes; and her beloved granddaughters, Evan and Marin Westrum and Peyton Splonskowski; brothers, Tony (Elaine) Krump, Jerry Krump; sisters, Darlene (Mike) Gripentrog, Jaye Smuhl; and numerous nieces and nephews that she cherished. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, and an infant brother, Leo.

Throughout her life, Mary exemplified kindness, compassion, and strength. Her family meant the world to her.

A private memorial service honoring Mary will be held followed by a celebration of life at her residence at a later date.

Mary Jane McDougall will be deeply missed. Her love, resilience, and spirit will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her. May she rest in peace.
