On Saturday, July 4, 2026, Mark Steven Nyhus, age 63, closed his eyes to this world and was peacefully reunited with his loved ones who went before him.
Mark was born on September 25, 1962, to Doug and Charlene Nyhus in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mark developed a deep devotion to family, a strong work ethic, and a lifelong passion for the outdoors from a young age. After graduating from Wadena High School in 1981, he went on to further his education at Wadena Area Vocational Technical Institute for electronics with emphasis in cable television.
Mark met and married the love of his life, Jill Hendrickson on September 10, 1988, at the Federated Church in Fergus Falls. Together, they built a welcoming home and shared nearly four decades of love, laughter, and adventure. Their shared love for the outdoors included fishing, pontoon rides, bonfires, snowmobiling and spending time with family and friends, whether it was cheering on the Minnesota Vikings or time spent at deer camp. Mark loved to find ways to save money and be frugal. He would always share his wisdom of how to save a buck.
Mark dedicated 36 years to a successful career in telecommunications with Arvig/Tek Star Communications in Detroit Lakes, retiring in May 2025 as a Combination Technician II. He was highly respected by his colleagues for his integrity and dependable nature—though if you asked Mark, he’d jokingly tell you he was a “supervisor” who spent his days “running lots of crews in the area.”
An avid outdoorsman, Mark felt most at home enjoying Minnesota’s seasons—whether deer hunting at his beloved "Spike Buck Ranch," ice fishing, snowmobiling, or sharing stories and jokes around a campfire. He was also a passionate dog lover, preceded in death by his faithful companions Jack Black and Gunner, and survived by his loyal dog, Deuce.
Mark was a kind, humble, and generous man with a great sense of humor that could brighten any room. Above all, he was a loyal friend, a kind uncle to his nieces and nephews, and a devoted family man whose compassionate heart touched countless lives.
Mark was preceded in death by his wife, Jill Nyhus, and his father, Doug Nyhus.
Mark is survived by his special friend and "Sugar Lady," Wanda Giese; his mother, Charlene Nyhus; his brother, Kent (Sena) Nyhus; his sister-cousin, Jolene Johannes; his cherished nieces, Cara Nyhus and Carly Nyhus; his godchildren, Darrick Meis and Ashley Laffen; his aunts, Marlene Stueve, Lois Foster, and Bonnie Thompson; his uncle, Dwayne "Butch" (Susan) Nyhus; his very special friends, Jerry (Brenda) Lawrence, Steve (Melanie) Walberg, Wyatt Walberg and Steve (Lynn) Drewes as well as a large community of extended family and dear friends who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.
Mark's family and friends invite you to join them in celebrating his life just as he would have wanted, surrounded by those he loved most, sharing good food, laughter, treasured stories, and the friendships that meant so much to him.
