Lyle Sonnenberg, 66, of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026. He was born on January 21, 1960, in Detroit Lakes to Bob and Janice Sonnenberg. Lyle grew up in the Detroit Lakes area. Lyle was a proud member of the Mountain View 4 H club. He also enjoyed playing on several different softball teams. He married the love of his life, Sue Pearson, on June 23, 1979, at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. Together, they built their life and raised their son in Detroit Lakes.
Lyle worked at the Hillcrest mink ranch after graduating from high school prior to working on their family mink ranch. Later in his career, he worked for Dynamic Homes before retiring in 2025. He enjoyed spending time in his garden. He used his creative skills making unique woodworking projects.
Family was at the center of Lyle's life. He and Sue welcomed their son, Jake, on May 10, 1983. Lyle took great pride in Jake and found tremendous joy in watching him participate in sports. He and Sue followed Jake around the state, rarely missing an opportunity to watch him play. Lyle enjoyed the fishing trips in Canada with Jake and his grandsons Sam and Ben.
Lyle was also proud grandfather to his grandsons, Sam and Ben. Lyle "Gramps" and Sue "Nanna" treasured their time together and made the most of very visit and opportunity to be with them. Lyle enjoyed teaching his grandsons about hunting, fishing and enjoying outdoor life.
He and Sue also shared a love of travel and created many wonderful memories together. Among their adventures was a scuba-diving experience where they went underwater to feed the fish.
Lyle will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories shared with the people he loved and the community that was home to him.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Janice Sonneberg, and brother Keith and nephew Brandon Bartsh. He is survived by his wife, Sue; son Jake; grandsons, Sam and Ben Sonnenberg; brother Neil (Roxanne) Sonnenberg, of Detroit Lakes, sister-in-law, Kathy Pearson of Fargo, Bonnie Pearson, Bemidji and brothers-in-laws, Mike Pearson of Barnsville and Jeff Pearson of Fargo, Jeff Gerdes of Audubon and many dear friends.
