LaVon Bakken

June 5, 1940 — June 21, 2008

LaVon L. Bakken, 68, Waubun, MN died Saturday, June 21, in her home under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. The Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 25, at St. Benedicts Catholic Church, White Earth, MN with Father Mitch Byeck officiating.  Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.




Visitation will be 4-8 PM Tuesday, June 24 with a Prayer Service at 6:00 PM at David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.




LaVon Lorene DeGroat was bornJune 5, 1940 to Clifford and Marion (Murray) DeGroat in White Earth, Minnesota.  She was raised and attended school in Waubun.  LaVon attended Minnesota State Community Technical College in Detroit Lakes and studied to be a chef.  She was united in marriage to Raymond Bakken in 1959 and they made their home near Ponsford, MN.  LaVon worked at the Chemical Dependency Unit and at the Circle of Life School in White Earth as a cook until the time of her retirement due to her illness. LaVon after retirement served as a member of the elder advisors for the White Earth Tribal and Community College, she contributed to the community through her generous contribution of time, prayers and talent.




LaVon enjoyed growing flowers, fishing, going on picnics with her family and spending time helping people.  She offered great support to her family and friends. LaVon had adopted many into her family, she was known to most as mom or grandma.  She will be sadly missed by her family and those that knew her.




LaVon is survived by her husband, Raymond of Waubun, MN; sons, Robert (Joann) Bakken of Waubun; an adopted son, Steve Johnson of Waubun; daughters, Debra Ann Bakken of Waubun, Cleo (Steve) Parker of Kimball, MN, Rhoda Bakken, Callaway, MN; an adopted brother, Paul Schultz of Waubun; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and several adopted children and grandchildren.




LaVon was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Marion; two brothers, Maurice and Larry; and a sister, Jean Maus. The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is serving the family.
