LaVaun Carrie Groth

LaVaun C. Groth age 88 of Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Herman, MN died January 24, 2024, at Essentia Health – Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.

LaVaun Carrie Groth was born May 15, 1935, in Perham, MN to Everett and Alice (Tillmann) Henderson. She grew up in Ogema, MN, where she attended grade school. She attended high school in Waubun, MN, graduating in 1953. She then furthered her education at Moorhead State University. On June 10, 1956, she was united in marriage to Roger Groth at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ogema. They made their home in Herman, MN, where she and her husband, along with his brother Graham owned and operated Groth Ford. LaVaun was an integral part of the dealership, wearing many hats on a daily basis.

On June 14, 2003, LaVaun married Jim Childs in her daughter’s back yard in Herman, after a long courtship. For years they spent summers on Juggler Lake and winters in South Padre, TX.

LaVaun was a member of LWML. She was also a fifty plus year member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Herman, as well as a life member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by one daughter, Jayne (Mark) Oachs, of Herman, MN; two sons, Dick (Barb) Groth, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Donn (Michelle) Groth, of Fargo, ND; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Lane) Pederson, Matthew (Heather) Oachs, Tyler Groth, Nick (Ashley) Groth, Alek Groth, Haley (Mel) Johnson, and Emily Groth; four great grandchildren, Brady Pederson, Jennaya Pederson, Brooklyn Oachs, and Asher Oachs; one sister, Luella Oberg, of Cardiff- by the Sea, CA; brother in law, Graham (Iloise) Groth; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her 1^st husband Roger Groth (1995); 2^nd husband James Childs (2013); brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Eileen Henderson; brother-in-law, A.H. Oberg; and her parents.

Funeral Services will be on Friday February 2, 2024; 11:00 a.m. at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Callaway, MN. Visitation will be on Thursday February 1, 2023, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. also at Beautiful Savior Church, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery, Herman, MN. (Friday February 2, 2024, at 3:30 p.m.). Arrangements have been entrusted to the David-Donehower Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes.
