John Joseph Gunderson

John Gunderson, 81, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2024.

John Joseph Gunderson was born to Joseph R. and Gladys M. (Grant) Gunderson in Albert Lea, MN on March 7, 1943.  An active, athletic boy, he excelled in swimming, wrestling, and hunting.  

John graduated from St. Olaf College, utilizing his degree teaching high school biology and coaching wrestling. He earned his Master’s Degree in Rangeland Management from the University of Wyoming, and began a distinguished career with the Soil Conservation Service and later, the Fish and Wildlife Service.

His favorite vacations included hunting, touring grasslands, and exploring historic sites of the Old West with his wife. He was pleased to successfully establish a variety of wildlife habitats in his own yard, attracting many birds and animals, as well as many curious passersby.

John fought multiple sclerosis for many years, always determined to make the best of it. Often a man of few words, He enjoyed hearing others talk about their adventures and plans. Though John wasn’t blessed with children of his own, he appreciated and enjoyed his church family.

Preceding John in death were his parents; his sister, Jean; and his brother-in-law, Dennis Warcup.

John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret; a sister, Sonja (Dave) Sanders; brother-in-law, Jim (Diane) Sargent; sisters-in-law, Diana Moon and Janna Warcup; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Faith Lutheran Church or Faith Christian School, Detroit Lakes, MN, or to donor’s choice.

The memorial service for John will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 11 AM with Pastor Paul Larson officiating.  Memorial visitation will be one hour prior.
