James Frederic Knapp was born November 11, 1931 in Tyler , MN to Wesley H. and Vina (Fredericksen) Knapp. He was raised and educated in Tyler where he graduated from high school in 1951. He is a 1956 cum laude graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN and 1960 graduate of the University Of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis . James was united in marriage to Joann Gould in June, 1957 in Roseville , MN . He served his internship at Highland Alameda County Hospital in Oakland , CA 1960 – 1961. They moved to Detroit Lakes , MN in 1961 where he joined the Detroit Lakes Clinic (now Innovis Health). He served on the staff of St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes and Dakota Hospital in Fargo , ND . During his career, in addition to his medical practice, he was the Satellite Medical Director and HMO Director for Dakota Clinic, Detroit Lakes; Medical Director for Dakota Clinic in Fargo (1988 – 1993); served on the St. Mary’s Hospital Board Of Directors, and was the Executive Director of the Dakota Clinic Health Plan (1994-1995); was a certified member of the American Board of Family Practice and a charter member of the American Board of Geriatric Medicine.



He was also a member of the Minnesota Medical Association, serving as Chairman of the Board 1979 – 1982 and President 1986 - 1987; Heart Of Lakes Chapter, Family Practice (serving as President in 1969); The American Medical Association; served on the Board Of Directors of Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Minnesota 1986 – 1994; served on the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice; and the Dakota-Heartland Board Of Directors.



Dr. Knapp’s community service included the Becker County Republican Party; Minnesota 7 th District Republican Committee; the Fargo/Moorhead Advisory Committee for Public Radio; The Congregational Church of Detroit Lakes where he is a past Board Of Trustees Chairman; The Lake Detroiters Association where he was President 1971 – 1979; Toastmasters where he was President 1965 – 1966; the Detroit Lakes United Way and American Foreign Students where he is a past co-chairman.



Survivors include his wife, Joann of Detroit Lakes; children, Leigh and her husband Mark Ota of Seattle, WA; Pam and her husband Willie Black of Indianapolis, IN, Sara and her husband, Mark Sneed of Washburn, WI; Chris and his wife Holly of Everett, WA, 7 grandchildren, Hannah Ota, Zoe and Carson Black, Kjirsten and Brenna Sneed, Calahan and Spencer Knapp, a brother, Wayne and his wife Carley Knapp of Federal Way, WA and a sister-in-law, Viola Knapp of Anoka, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Lee.
