James Maurer

James Warren Maurer M.D., 77, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, passed away at home on August 24, 2026, following a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.

James was born on August 26, 1948, in Jamestown, North Dakota, to Charles Dwight Maurer and Florence Catherine Plinski Maurer. He grew up with his siblings, Charles D. Maurer Jr., Jackie (Maurer) Wanzer, Joan (Maurer) Connell, and Mary Jane (Maurer) Ingstad. He attended both Shanley High School and Fargo North High School, where he participated in hockey, football, and track, and later graduated from the University of North Dakota Medical School.

James began his military service as a paratrooper in the United States Army. He later returned to active duty as an Army physician, serving as a medical officer and ultimately attaining the rank of Major. Following his active-duty service, he continued to serve his country in the Army Reserve.

He practiced medicine in California, Hawaii, North Dakota, Texas, and Florida. He was known for his integrity, strong sense of duty, and commitment to caring for others.

On August 21, 1971, James married Judy Goff Maurer in Fargo, North Dakota, and together they shared 55 years of marriage. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and the steady foundation of his family, always offering guidance, support, and care.

A man of deep faith, James was a practicing Catholic and a member of St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church.

James enjoyed golf, hockey, and time with family. He especially loved the water and split much of his life between Minnesota and Florida.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Florence Maurer; his son, John Quinlan; and his daughter, Sarah Seuntjens.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Maurer, who never left his side; his daughter Aimee Ullrich and her husband, Jon Ullrich, of Lake Park, Minnesota; his daughter Jennifer Bailey and her husband, Tom Bailey, of St. Augustine, Florida; and many beloved grandchildren, extended family members, and friends.

James will be remembered for his faith, honor, generosity, and devotion to his family, and for the example he set in always doing the right thing.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on September 4, 2026, at St. Mary of the Lakes, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m. The service will be officiated by Monsignor Foltz, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
