Gladys Wilke

November 7, 1918 — September 17, 2019

Detroit Lakes

Gladys Evelyn Wilke, age 100, passed away peacefully in her residence on September 17, 2019.  Gladys was born on November 7, 1918, to E.W. and Emma (Boehmer) Jasch in Crookston, Minnesota.  The family moved to Detroit Lakes when Gladys was a young child.

Gladys attended school in Detroit Lakes where she graduated from High School.  She married Walter Wilke on August 24, 1940, and the two built the home in Detroit Lakes in which Gladys lived for 75 years.  The couple had two children, Joanne and Collin.  When the children were older, Gladys worked as a bookkeeper in the bulk oil company that Walter managed.  She worked there until her retirement in 1975.

Gladys and Walter enjoyed being in and working in the outdoors, and in 1960 they purchased property on Pickerel Lake where the whole family has enjoyed many happy times over the decades.

She is survived by her children, Joanne (Dennis) McCarl and Collin Wilke; grandchildren Chris (Kay) Carlson, Christine (Chris) Hamre, Nicole McCarl, and Aubree (Eric) Kees; and great-grandchildren Emily Zorn, Gabe Zorn and Samantha Harling.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Walter (1999); brothers Donald, Virgil and Orval; sisters Cerilda Ellis and Rosella McCann; and daughter-in-law Wendy Wilke.

Gladys was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, where funeral services will be held on Monday, September 23, at 11:00 with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes.
