Detroit Lakes

A celebration of Ellie’s life is being planned for May 4, 2024 from 11-2:00pm at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.

Elouise Lenaye (Winter) Dovre, age 81, passed away Friday evening, February 16, 2024, at Pelican Landing in Detroit Lakes with her husband at her side.

Ellie was born in Sugarbush TWP, on January 22, 1943, the youngest of 8 children to Michael and Elva (Johnson) Winter.  She attended country school out by Strawberry Lake and was a 1961 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School.

Ellie married Donald L. Dovre at the Detroit Lakes United Methodist Church on August 22, 1970, and together they raised three sons.   She worked at the Detroit Lakes Clinic in her early years, and later for Lutheran Social Services-Nutrition Center.   Ellie went on to work as an administrative assistant for the Law Offices of Hummel, Sinclair & Hunt, retiring at the age of 62.

Throughout her life, Ellie had a great desire to help less fortunate children, and dedicated many years to local “giving trees” at holiday times.  She was an avid reader, reading a book a week for many years.  Stephen King and James Patterson were among her favorite authors.   She loved to embroider, and was also a lover of flowers, in particular, tulips.  Ellie had a tremendous love for family, and will be sadly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Don, of over 53 years; her son, Jon, a brother, Rodney (Sue) Winter, as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ellie was preceded in death by her parents, her two sons: Thomas and Jason; and her siblings: Donald (Trudy) Winter, Betty (Howard) Toman, Duane (Judy) Winter, Shirley (Bob) McCarty, Darrel Winter and Marjo Birdsall.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Pelican Landing and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their care of Ellie.

If desired, memorials in Ellie’s name may be made to: St Jude’s, the Wounded Warrior Project or to the Salvation Army.
