Elizabeth Cummings

June 5, 1915 — December 8, 2008

Elizabeth L. Cummings, 93, Detroit Lakes, died Monday, December 8 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Mass Of Christian Burial will be 2:00 PM Friday, December 12 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, Fr. Jerry Rogers, officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery. Friends may call 4:00 – 8:00 with a prayer service at 7:30 Thursday, December 11 at Holy Rosary Church. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass Friday at Holy Rosary Church


Elizabeth L. Young was born June 5, 1915 in Waubun, MN to Frank and Margaret (Wiebersch) Young. She moved with her family to Detroit Lakes in 1928 and is a 1933 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. Elizabeth worked as a sales clerk for J. C. Penney Co, Montgomery Wards and for Blandings Department Store where she was the buyer for the Children’s Department prior to her retirement in 1978. She has been a resident of Park Manor since it opened in 1979.


Elizabeth was an avid reader and instilled in her children a love of reading. She enjoyed the Minnesota Twins, gardening (both flower and vegetable), was a competitive card and board game player, was well known for her baking and, having been a sales clerk for women’s clothing, was always perfectly dressed.


Survivors include a son, Tom and his wife Peggy Cummings of Detroit Lakes; a daughter, Doreen and her husband Dr. Frank Malin of Ross, CA; six grandchildren, Catherine Malin, Jordan Malin, Josh Cummings, Sarah Rosing, Aaron Cummings and Leah Cummings; a brother, Roy and his wife Peggy Young of St. Paul, MN; a sister, Lorenza Bittner of Fargo, ND. She was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Young.
