Edgar H. Ewals age 94 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Friday August 23, 2024, at Essentia Health – St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Edgar Hubert Ewals was born May 24, 1930, in Detroit Lakes, MN to Lenard and Ruth (Swanson) Ewals. He grew up in Detroit Lakes and attended Holy Rosary Catholic School thru the eighth grade. He then attended high school at St. John’s Prep School in Collegeville, MN. Following high school he worked for Bergen’s Greenhouse in Detroit Lakes. He later served in the United States Army. On June 21, 1954, he was united in marriage to Lucille Vareberg at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. They made their home and raised their kids in Detroit Lakes. Ed worked for Northwestern Bell for 32 years. In his retirement Ed continued to fix telephones for numerous businesses in the area and was also sought out by ladies to repair sewing machines in his garage and dining room table. He was known as "Mr.Ed".
Edgar was a real “people person.” He enjoyed making others happy and had a real knack for this by being a very cheerful, positive person. He also enjoyed a good joke. Time spent with his family was also very important to him. He enjoyed bingo, bowling, playing the piano, fixing sewing machines in his basement, and playing pinochle with anyone who would play. Ed was also a very proud member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille; four daughters, Shirley (Doug) Morrison, of Waubun, MN; Diane (Chris) Gibson, of Hastings MN; Patricia (David) Glass, of Eagan, MN; and Monica Ewals-Nelson, of Brooklyn Park, MN; three sons, Peter (Debra) Ewals, of Waconia, MN; Daniel Ewals, of Bloomington, MN; and Christopher (Stephanie) Ewals, of St. Francis, MN; eighteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Lloyd; one sister, Rosemary Heit; and one son in law, John Nelson.
Family is requesting in lieu of flowers; memorials be given to the family.
