David Hogan

September 21, 1948 — May 4, 2025

David (Dave) Hogan passed away suddenly yet peacefully on May 4, 2025, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota at the age of 76.

Dave was born in Valley City, North Dakota to parents Franklin and Alice (Clark) Hogan.

Dave spent his childhood surrounded by family, enjoying trips to visit their grandparents in Steel North Dakota, and to White Earth, MN at the lake. He enjoyed riding bikes, baseball, fishing, camping, trips to reptile gardens, throwing snowballs in the mountains, Paul Bunyan in Bemidji, prairie dog town, panning for gold, mount Rushmore, and more. Dave also would pay his sister Mary to do his chores because he hated doing the dishes.

Up until Dave graduated high school he and his family lived in various cities throughout the years. Some include Valley City, ND, Waubun, MN, Grand Forks, ND, Appleton, WI, and Columbia Heights, MN.

During his time spent in Appleton Wisconsin, Dave lettered in intramural basketball. Dave later graduated high school from Columbia Heights, MN and then joined the United States Navy.

Dave served as a sonar technician in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1974 and was later honorably discharged. He served in Key West Florida, Newfoundland Canada, Coos Bay Oregon, and Adak Alaska.

In 1968 Dave became officially enrolled in The Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. His grandmother and mother grew up on the White Earth Indian Reservation and has ancestral roots there. Before Dave entered the nursing home in Detroit Lakes, he was living in Waubun and loved it there.

Dave married Barb and they had two children together, David Jr and Kari. They were able to travel with him while he served in the Navy. Barb and Dave later divorced.

Dave had various jobs throughout the years and had many talents. He enjoyed leatherwork and playing tennis. After his mother passed away in 1991, he made a beautiful photo album made from leather for her memory book.

Earthly possessions did not mean much to Dave. Although he struggled for many years with addiction and family relationships, he was a good kind person, had a keen discerning mind and great potential. He could make friends anywhere and had a good sense of humor.

He is predeceased by his parents Franklin (2021) and Alice (Clark) Hogan (1991), his Sister Geralyn Ann Hogan (1954), brother-in-law Gordon Duncombe (2020), sister-in-Law Denise Hogan (2023), Nephews Robert F. Hogan (2008) and Daniel Gordon Duncombe (2012).
