Betty E. Fischer

Betty Fischer, nee Gullander, 95, of Detroit Lakes, MN passed away on August 22, 2026. Betty was born October 21, 1930, in Hallock, MN to Alvina and Oscar Gullander. She graduated from Hallock High School in 1948, then attended Gustavus Adolfus College for two years, and graduated from the University of MN.

Betty met her future husband Henry (Hank) Fischer in 1952 on the ski slopes in Glenwood, MN, where she lived and worked as an elementary school teacher. They married in December 1954 and settled in Detroit Lakes, MN, where Betty taught elementary school until 1957. Betty later returned to the DL schools as a special education teacher from 1973 to 1988 after which she retired to enjoy grandchildren and snowbird travel.

Betty loved small town life and was proud to be a part of the DL community. She was happiest in the company of longtime friends, a circle of people who supported each other and had fun together. She and Hank were founding members of the DL Dance Club and Newcomers Club. Betty was active in Damiens and 1st Lutheran Church choir and served on the Public Library Committee for many years.

Betty will be remembered for her quick wit, her devotion to friends and family, her eye for design and color, and her love of card games.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Janyce and Faye, and her loving husband Hank. She is survived by her sister Maxine, children Kristin, Katherine and Guy, daughter in law Carol and grandchildren Greta, Clay and Brady.

The Fischer family is grateful for the caring and competent care of Hearts in Action Hospice and Cornerstone Caregiving providers. We also appreciate the support of so many friends and colleagues who visited, called or held Betty in their hearts these past few months.
