Wesley Johnson

March 4, 1920 — June 16, 2008

Wesley J. Johnson, 88, of Detroit Lakes, MN died Monday, June 16 at his home under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. The Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Monday, June 30 at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes with Reverend David Peterson officiating. Interment is in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.




Friends may call 3:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday, June 29 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes with a Masonic Memorial Service at 5:30 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.




Wesley Jacob Johnson was born March 4, 1920 near Frazee, MN to Jacob and Mary (Freid) Johnson. He was raised and educated in rural Frazee schools and worked on the family farm as a young man. Wesley had worked in California for a year prior to joining the U.S. Army. Following his discharge from the service he lived in Flushing, NY where he married Rosemary Cornetta on March 24, 1946. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1947 and operated Detroit Paint and Glass from 1951 to 1978. In 1978 Wesley had a small hobby farm in rural Detroit Lakes. After the sale of the store Wesley and Rosemary spent their summers in Detroit Lakes and winters in Arizona. Rosemary died in 2000.




Wesley is survived by three daughters, Joyce (Duane) Halvorson of New Hope, MN, Janice Hakkenan of Oakland, CA, Cheryl (Michael) Sagat of Oakland, CA; son, Jay (Anne McKay) Johnson of Detroit Lakes; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; one sister, Dorothy Fagerlie of Moorhead, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary; his parents; sisters, Clara, Marion, Cynthia, Mabel, Alma and Thressa; brothers, Joseph and Alf.




Wesley enjoyed his family and friends, the get-togethers, hunting, fishing, and his community involvements.
