Melvin Bergh

November 1, 1918 — August 11, 2010

Melvin Bergh, age 91, of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. The funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 14 at the Oak Crossing Chapel in Detroit Lakes. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the nursing home on Saturday.   Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes.

Mel was born on November 1, 1918, in Douglas, ND, the son of Soren and Marie (Olson) Bergh.  He was united in marriage to Theresa Dovre on August 25, 1944.  They lived for many years, working and raising a son and a daughter, in Long Prairie, MN.  Mel was totally devoted to his family.  He worked as a mechanic at the North Star Dairy processing plants in Detroit Lakes and Browerville.  He was very mechanically talented and in the words of a neighbor, "Mel can fix anything."  He served his country in the Army in Europe during World War II.  Mel and his wife retired in Detroit Lakes, where they spent many wonderful, active years.

Mel loved the outdoors and fishing and hunting.  He watched the Vikings and the Minnesota Twins and especially appreciated that the Twins played with such heart.  Mel was a great dancer and he and his wife went to many old-time fiddle contests and polka festivals.  For many years they organized an old-time fiddle contest in Detroit Lakes.  In their retirement years, Mel and his wife traveled extensively in their motorhome.

Mel is survived by his wife Theresa, Detroit Lakes; one son, Jon (Geri), Jacksonville, FL; one daughter, Judith, Dilworth, MN; and one granddaughter, Katherine Crowley, Duluth, MN.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and five sisters.
