Leila Schmidt

December 16, 1912 — March 29, 2008

Lelia G. Schmidt, 95, Detroit Lakes, MN died on Saturday, March 29 at St. Marys Nursing Center, Detroit Lakes. The Funeral Service will be 10:30 AM Friday, April 4 at First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes with Reverend Dave Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.



Visitation will be 4-8 PM Thursday, April 3 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Friday.



Lelia Grace Schmidt was born December 16, 1912 in Detroit Lakes to Lloyd and Grace (Frank) Cusey. She was raised and attended school there graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1932. She then attended secretarial school in the Twin Cities area. Lelia returned to Detroit Lakes where she worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for the Gamble Skogmo Stores in Detroit Lakes, Wadena, Fergus Falls and the Fargo-Moorhead area. Lelia was united in marriage with Clarence Schmidt on December 28, 1939 in the United Methodist Church, Detroit Lakes.



Lelia and Clarence made their home in Erie Township and had served as President, Secretary, and Treasurer for the Erie Telephone Company until it was taken over by Bell Telephone Company. They organized and were key leaders of the Burlington Cubs 4-H Club for 13 years. Lelia was a member of the Becker County Extension Homemaker Program for 30 years. After leaving the work force and being a homemaker, Lelia began working in 1958 as a bookkeeper for Berg Auto Electric for 8 years. She also worked for the Agricultural Extension Service as secretary for 10 years and part time secretary for the Veterans Service Office in Detroit Lakes for five years. Clarence died in 1976 and Lelia continued to make her home in Erie Township. In 1987 she moved to Detroit Lakes.



Lelia joined RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) and was a member of Emmanuel Nursing Home Auxiliary, hair care and Senior Nutrition Center in the Crafts department. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher for several years, FLCW Circle as an officer, the quilters and a member of Golden Agers.



Lelia is survived by two sons, Don (Caroline) Schmidt of Detroit Lakes, Bob (Joyce) Schmidt of Maplewood, MN; a daughter, Doris (Don) Wurst of Frazee, MN; 10 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 7 step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; a daughter at infancy; her parents and three brothers.
