Joyce Goetze-Sherman

June 5, 1937 — May 31, 2016

Joyce was born June 5, 1937, to Clarence and Orevilla "Honey" Wieland in New Ulm, MN. Joyce attended her senior year in both Comfrey and New Ulm and, as a result of her bubbly personality and being liked by many, was considered a graduate of both schools and was always invited to both reunions. In 1957, Joyce met the love of her life, Maynard Goetze, and on December 17, 1960, they were united in marriage. They lived in Bloomington for 12 years where they shared many memories, including starting a family and hosting countless house parties with their friends and family. In 1975, the family moved to Roseau, MN, where Maynard built Joyce her dream home on the river. She had a passion for getting involved in things; she quickly became a part of serving at church and also began working for the U.S. Census Bureau, which led to a 20-year career that fueled her love of working with people. After Maynard passed in 1988, Joyce met Merle Sherman. They shared a love of dancing and socializing and were united in marriage on December 26, 1992. Joyce's passions included being with her family in activities such as camping, snowmobiling, skiing, or fishing, whether on the ice or the open water. She loved traveling, especially on cruises. She enjoyed gardening, canning, dancing, Elvis, and making sure everyone always had enough to eat! She loved the many fish fries that she shared with the neighbors. Joyce delighted in her horses at the ranch.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Merle Sherman of Frazee, MN; her daughter, Janell (Phil) Riley of Buffalo, MN; a son, David (Jane) Goetze of Dallas, TX; a step-daughter, Melody (Tracy) Gentle of Fergus Falls, MN; sisters, Juleen Flaa of Scottsdale, AZ, Lorraine Wright of Davidson, NC, and Sandy (Lou) Garcia of League City, TX; grandchildren, Zachary, Gabriel & Natalie Synstelien and Sara Goetze, and Ashley Henderson. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Honey; and her husband, Maynard.
