Howard Tyberg

June 19, 1927 — September 20, 2008

Howard E. Tyberg was born June 19, 1927 in Elbow Lake, MN to August and Effylen (Mickelson) Tyberg. He graduated from Elbow Lake High School in 1945. Howard enlisted in the U.S. Navy while in High School and was stationed at Great Lakes, IL during World War II. He graduated from Mankato State University in 1950 with degrees in Math and Industrial Education. On September 15, 1951 Howard was united in marriage to Lorraine Jacobson in Elbow Lake, MN. From 1950-1952 Howard farmed and was employed by Erickson Furniture and Funeral Home in Elbow Lake. From 1952-1963 he taught math and industrial education at Long Prairie (MN) High School. While in Long Prairie he was a Boy Scout leader, and was a charter member of the Lion’s Club and Toastmasters. In 1960 he received his masters Degree from Mankato (MN) State University and continued to further his education at Kent State University and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. From 1963-1986 he taught Industrial Education at Detroit Lakes High School and from 1968-1975 had taught summer session for graduate students at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Bemidji State University. Howard retired from the classroom in 1986 and continued as a master craftsmen designing and building cabinets and furniture. He enjoyed his shop until ill health forced him to retire at age 80.




He was honored in 1971 and 1973 by the “Leaders of American Secondary Education”.




Howard taught the first Adult Education class in Detroit Lakes with adult woodworking which he continued to teach for 25 years. He was on a committee of four that went to St. Paul to argue for a Vo-Tech in Detroit Lakes. Howard was an active member of the District and State Industrial Technology Associations, First Lutheran Church, Helping Hands, Retired teachers, Friday afternoon coffee club, the American Legion and Ultra Snowmobile Club, which he helped organize. He was an active snowmobiler which he enjoyed for 40 years and was recently recognized by the Department Of Natural Resources for 30 years of service as a snowmobile safety instructor.




Howard is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Detroit Lakes; a son, Gary (Jade) of Alpharetta, GA; a daughter, Beth Ann (Deryk) Funkhouser, Burnsville, MN; five grandchildren, Amber and Sara Funkhouser, Jamie, Jasmine and Joshua Tyberg; and step-grandson, Sean Eason.; his brother, Sheldon (Mildred), Elbow Lake, MN; several nieces and nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Howard was preceded in death by his parents.


Howard will be remembered for his strong work ethic, story telling and his willingness to help others
