Henry Meyer

Henry Meyer was born September 4, 1922 in Queens County, New York, New York to Henry C. and Louise (Christman) Meyer. He is a graduate of Newtown High School in New York City. Following graduation, he worked in the accounting department of a bank in New York City. He served with the U. S. Army Air Corps 1942 – 1945. During his time with the Army Air Corps, he flew 30 bombing missions over Germany with the 8 ^th Air Force, 94 ^th Bomb Wing. He was proud of his service to his country and had many stories to tell about his time in the service.

While stationed in Grand Forks, ND with the Air Corps, he met Thelma Fagerlie who was a substitute teacher for a class that Hank was taking. Upon his discharge, he returned to New York City where he joined the New York City Police Department. Hank and Thelma were united in marriage August 5, 1946 in New York City.

Following 25 years with the police department, Hank retired in 1970 and operated an independent painting business from which he retired in 1980. He and Thelma then spent their winters in Brookville, FL and their summers in rural Audubon, MN. Thelma died June 13, 2006.

Survivors include a son, H. Christopher and his wife Julie Meyer of Andover, MN; a daughter, Linda and her husband Donald Nielsen of Daytona Beach, FL; six grandchildren, Keith and his wife Leah Meyer, Colleen Meyer, Patricia Meyer, Erik and his wife Paige Nielsen, Kirsten and her husband Joe Waters, Bret and his wife Amy Nielsen; eight great-grandchildren, Savannah, Joseph, Abagail and Henry Waters, Emily, Hunter, Tanner and Carter Nielsen. In addition to his wife, Thelma, Hank was preceded in death y a brother, Fred.

Hank enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing and band music. He was a member of the New York City Police Band, the New York Shrine Band, the Newport-Ritchie (FL) Band and the Ulen (MN) Centennial Band. He was known for his loyalty to his family and friends. Memorials are preferred to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
