Helen Taylor

Helen Ruth Taylor, age 74, of Detroit Lakes, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at Elim Nursing Home in Fargo, ND. A funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 23, at David Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, Pastor Melvin Manning officiating. A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, June 22, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm, and will continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Helen was born on January 8, 1941, to Andrew and Ruth (Day) Mortenson in Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Waubun High School in 1959. In 1963 she moved to Alaska where she married Robert Dean Taylor. Together they raised five children in Anderson, Alaska, until Robert's death in 1980. Helen then returned home to Detroit Lakes with her family. She continued her education at the Detroit Lakes AVTI, and upon graduation purchased and operated Mickey's Café, where she was known for making the best chili and burgers in the Lakes Area. She spent her later years in retirement, enjoying her family. Helen enjoyed gardening, crafting, and crocheting, and made blankets for her entire family and anyone who wanted one. Her most treasured pastime was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her children, Jeff Taylor of Anderson, AK, Carolyn (Gregg) Pekas of Hawley, Greg Taylor of Nenana, AK, Mark (Katie) Taylor of Farmington, and Kevin Taylor and Abby Gold of Moorhead; brothers, Les Mortenson of Clear, AK, Bruce Mortenson of Waubun, Roy Mortenson of Hitterdal, and Floyd Mortenson of Howe, OK; 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; Her husband, Robert; an infant son, Christopher; sisters, Merle, Audrey, and Vida; and brothers, Allan and Ron.
