Anna Basswood

December 11, 1910 — March 21, 2008



Anna Basswood was born December 11, 1910 in Danbury, Wisconsin to Grover Oshgay and Nancy Stevens. As an infant, she was adopted by Rev. James and Jane Rice. She came to the Ponsford area as a young woman and would harvest vegetables in the Fargo, ND area. For many years, she would take part in the annual wild rice harvest and she also worked in the maintenance department at the Pine Point Indian Health Service Clinic. During her lifetime, she took great pride in taking care of her family. She married Albert Basswood Sr. who preceded her in death in 1997. Anna enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, providing gifts for her family, playing BINGO, doing beadwork, sewing, puzzles, plastic canvas craft work, going to Pow Wows, watching her family play softball, watching All Star Wrestling and watching Days Of Our Lives, her favorite soap opera.



In 1998, she was recognized by the White Earth Tribal Council as the Outstanding Elder in the community; in 2000, she was named the Pine Point Woman Of The Year; in 2005, she was named the MIEA Outstanding American Indian Elder Of The Year; She walked over 100 miles in the Wisdom Steps walks and was a member of the Pine Point Elders Council.



Anna is survived by her children, Albert Basswood Jr., Delmar and his wife, Gina Basswood, Doris Weaver, Margaret Basswood, Mary Lou Basswood, Patricia and her husband, Ed Miller, and Richinda Rock all of Ponsford, Debra Conklin of Detroit Lakes, a step-daughter, Jenny Basswood of Mahnomen, 44 grandchildren, 81great grandchildren, 40 great great grandchildren, a sister, Margaret Bryan of Cass Lake, MN and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Albert, she was preceded in death by sons, Maynard, Rolland and Richard Sr. and a daughter, Rosetta.
